AEC business and project management software company, Total Synergy, turns 21\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/581973266?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"content-row row no-padding-top, no-padding-bottom\" style=\"border-color: #ffffff; background-color: #fff;\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row-bounds\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"single ww \">\n\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To mark Total Synergy\u2019s 21<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> birthday on August 1, we sat down with our very own founder and CEO, Scott Osborne, to find out what it means to see his start-up all grown up (and continuing to grow).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Conception to birth: 1998-2000<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1998, Scott was working in a large, multinational computing firm. This company was the third and largest software company he\u2019d worked for. Retrospectively, these years can be seen as Scott\u2019s \u2018intel gathering\u2019 phase, although he didn\u2019t know it at the time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In March of that year, the director of one of the engineering firms where he worked, approached Scott and posed a problem. His company couldn\u2019t find a software solution that worked for their particular, project-centric industry. Nothing fit.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cHe said, \u2018You know how AEC companies work. You know the software industry. Is there anything out there that can help us?\u2019\u201d says Scott.\u00a0 \u201cSo, I did the research to try and find a solution. I tried to show him systems from other sectors, like the legal industry, and the accounting industry. But none of them matched the way they do business.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Scott and the engineering director asked others in the built environment design industry what they used. They quickly discovered that their colleagues didn\u2019t have any software solutions either. AEC was in need.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Scott says, \u201cFrom \u201998 to 2000, I was working full time, and paying for the software to be built out of my wages \u2013 it was a classic software start-up story.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In February of 2000, Scott took the software live. In August, he released it to the general market, under the Total Synergy banner, and Synergy software was born.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cool kid to teen dream: 2001-2010<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the beginning, there was Scott, and only Scott. He did everything from designing the software itself, to marketing it, selling it, and implementing it. \u201cIf there was anything that needed to be changed,\u201d he says, \u201cI&#8217;d go back to the developers and I&#8217;d redesign it. That&#8217;s how it started.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indeed, of Total Synergy\u2019s first 10 customers, eight are still clients to this day. That said, within a year, we had 30 companies on the books.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As Total Synergy began to grow and employ staff, those customers continued to be invested and active in the development of Synergy. Total Synergy was designing software <\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">for<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> them, \u201cso, they were getting involved and saying, \u2018What I really need is this and this, and this.\u2019\u201d Says Scott. That collaboration with the engineers, architects, urban and town planners, surveyors, and other built environment design professionals who use Synergy remains an integral part of our product\u2019s continual development.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThat&#8217;s probably the biggest learning for me, and any of our clients would agree too,\u201d says Scott, \u201cyou have to adapt to grow.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Outgrowing expectations: 2011-2019<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c21 years is a long time,\u201d says Scott. And it really is. With some sources reporting the average lifespan of a software start up as two to three years, 21 is positively senior. A lot changes in that time and lessons abound.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe vision doesn&#8217;t change,\u201d says Scott, \u201cwe&#8217;re serving our built environment design customer, and we&#8217;re helping them succeed in business \u2014 that&#8217;s what we do. But how we do that changes every day.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Evolution that\u2019s all about you: 2020-beyond<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s true. What Total Synergy was doing last year isn\u2019t what they\u2019re doing this year. The Synergy software platform is evolving all the time, with new releases and updates every month to meet the evolving needs of our customer base.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhen we talk about \u2018software as a service\u2019, we don&#8217;t mean \u2018subscription\u2019\u201d says Scott. \u201cWe mean it&#8217;s a service we provide. And that service means we will continue to fix your business and project management problems. We&#8217;ll continue to find solutions.
