Sure, it sounds a little\u00a0like\u00a0a\u00a0K-pop dance that\u2019s trending on\u00a0TikTok, but\u00a0Kanban is the culmination of our journey towards task management<\/a> mastery for AEC project businesses. So, it\u2019s even cooler\u00a0than the\u00a0TikTok\u00a0thing.<\/p>\n

Synergy software is already known to be the industry leader in project financials for architecture, engineering, and construction design (AEC) and now we’re innovating our way to an industry leadership role in the task management side of things. As you know, we\u2019re fancy like that. So, let\u2019s get into the Kanban release.<\/p>\n

Arriving at Kanban<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0last\u00a0release\u00a0blog<\/a> was about managing to-dos for your projects. That was about managing outputs, not inputs \u2014 outcomes, not hours \u2014 and our users who’ve adopted this are noticing that their to-do lists can become quite long, quite quickly. You start to need a better way to visualize how people track their way through that long list of to-dos, and order the priority, and that’s where Kanban boards come in.<\/p>\n

This is the first\u00a0Kanban\u00a0release\u00a0and\u00a0there’ll be another in a month or so.\u00a0We know, it\u2019s exciting.\u00a0Have you heard of or used\u00a0Trello<\/a>? This first release of Synergy\u2019s Kanban board is a bit like that, only we\u2019ve built it to closely match the workflows of a built environment design office or consultancy.<\/p>\n

Kanban\u00a0for AEC \u2014 like a glove<\/h3>\n

In the traditional Kanban, you\u2019ve got columns of tickets or cards, each of which represents a single task. Each column represents a status for the completion of the task card beneath it \u2014 backlog\/to-do\/doing\/done \u2014 and all the columns are exactly the same.<\/p>\n

Now, whilst that’s very flexible and easy to understand, it doesn’t actually match the real workloads\u00a0of our AEC people.\u00a0We’ve\u00a0tweaked\u00a0the\u00a0Synergy Kanban\u00a0layout to make it more convenient\u00a0for you\u00a0to use:<\/p>\n

  • We\u2019ve made it easier\u00a0to see the backlog cards, which\u00a0are upcoming tasks that\u00a0haven’t yet been addressed or\u00a0assigned\u00a0to\u00a0anybody\u00a0yet<\/li>\n
  • We\u2019ve\u00a0tied those backlog cards to the schedule you\u00a0already created for the project, so they\u2019re\u00a0automatically sorted based\u00a0on that.\u00a0This means\u00a0you don’t have one massive backlog of everything that ever might happen. It’s already sorted into\u00a0what\u00a0you should be doing by now, based on\u00a0your\u00a0schedule<\/li>\n
  • The to-do column is double width, so there is plenty of space to load up a weeks worth of work. Then when a job starts, you drag it to the In-Progress column, which is single width because, well, you should only be doing one thing at a time<\/li>\n
  • When a task is complete, the associated card can be dropped into a \u2018for review\u2019 column. The ‘for review’ column, automatically knows (based again, on the way you’ve set up your project) who the project manager is on that stage. When you drop a card into it Synergy automatically sends a notification to the project manager to sign off<\/li>\n
  • Once the\u00a0project manager\u00a0signs off on the\u00a0card with a\u00a0tick box\u00a0to agree that\u00a0the task is complete, the card\u00a0goes into\u00a0the\u00a0\u2019done\u2019\u00a0column. Again, unlike something like Trello where all the columns are equal, we’ve hidden the done column, because really, in our industry,\u00a0once it’s done, it just takes up valuable real estate and doesn’t\u00a0add anything useful.\u00a0There’s a toggle where you can go to the done column and have a look through the stuff\u00a0that\u2019s finished<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    We’ve made an effort to customize the way the Kanban screen looks\u00a0(so\u00a0it’s familiar and easy to use)\u00a0but we’ve hidden the stuff you don’t need, and we’ve given you more space for the stuff that’s important.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
