<\/p>\n

Planning the path to precision<\/h3>\n

You know those\u00a0camphor wood boxes that are so beautifully engraved?\u00a0Their outsides are carved in relief in\u00a0incredible detail.\u00a0Well, if you were to\u00a0go into one of the workshops where they make those, there’s a worker who firstly does the carving with an axe \u2014 just roughs it out.\u00a0And then\u00a0the box is handed\u00a0over to the next\u00a0worker, and\u00a0they have a\u00a0chisel. After that, it\u2019s handed\u00a0over to the next\u00a0worker and they\u2019ve\u00a0got a much smaller chisel, and then there’s this little old\u00a0artisan\u00a0with a scalpel\u00a0\u2014\u00a0doing the faces and all the fine detail.<\/p>\n

You can’t start off making a camphor wood box with a scalpel. You’ve got to start off with\u00a0an\u00a0axe. You’ve got to start with the big picture and make it finer and finer as you go.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re doing the same thing with\u00a0resource planning<\/a>\u00a0in Synergy.\u00a0We’re\u00a0adding\u00a0features that allow you to get more and more detailed with your task management.\u00a0And the April release\u00a0is the much smaller chisel.\u00a0Look at those happy little faces appearing.<\/p>\n

Weekly resource planning \u2014 so pretty!<\/h3>\n

In the\u00a0previous release<\/a>\u00a0we introduced the ability to\u00a0drag the stage bars\u00a0around\u00a0on the planning\u00a0board. The beauty of that is that it’s really easy to pick one up and move it\u00a0\u2014 and when you’re moving\u00a0it,\u00a0you’re moving a whole time slot. So I can say,\u00a0\u2018Anu\u00a0is working\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0apartment project\u00a0for 40 hours a week for the next six weeks,\u2019\u00a0and then\u00a0decide,\u00a0\u2018no,\u00a0she’s not going to start next week, she’s starting the week after,\u2019\u00a0so I can just pick up the whole bar and\u00a0reposition\u00a0it. It’s just one flick of the wrist.<\/p>\n

Or we\u00a0might decide\u00a0it’s not going to be six\u00a0weeks;\u00a0it’s going to be seven weeks.\u00a0Okay, I just grab the end of\u00a0the resource\u00a0bar\u00a0that represents Anu, drag it out a bit,\u00a0and it will be a little bit longer.\u00a0Again,\u00a0we’re planning this way with a flick of the wrist, so it’s sort of gestural.\u00a0Almost like our camphor\u00a0wood creators. Nice.<\/p>\n

In this release we’ve arrived at the level of being able to define how many hours somebody is working this week on a particular\u00a0stage in\u00a0a\u00a0particular\u00a0job.<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0stages go for months or even years.\u00a0You start off with a plan where the project manager says,\u00a0\u2018if you give me these people for this amount of time, I can deliver this project on time and on budget\u2019. Great. You\u2019re going to start off with one very long\u00a0resource\u00a0bar that says, \u2018Anu is working for Paul for six weeks for 20 hours a week\u2019.<\/p>\n

With the April release\u00a0though, you can\u00a0click that\u00a0view, so instead of showing you the bar that just amortized the\u00a0whole\u00a0period, you can\u00a0open an editable, Excel-like grid\u00a0and\u00a0enter the\u00a0specific\u00a0dates and\u00a0exact\u00a0number of hours\u00a0you want to allocate to Anu\u00a0next week.\u00a0Once you\u2019ve entered that\u00a0information,\u00a0if you switch back to the\u00a0bar view,\u00a0you\u2019ll see\u00a0that it\u00a0breaks\u00a0the bar into two sections\u00a0\u2014 one\u00a0with\u00a0the new number you typed in, and the rest\u00a0reflecting the remaining amount.\u00a0This grid view makes\u00a0it easy to make fine-tuned changes.<\/p>\n

Swapping the axe for the scalpel \u2014 it\u2019s a beautiful thing.<\/p>\n

So,\u00a0you’ve got a\u00a0long-term\u00a0plan\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and you’re not breaking that\u00a0\u2014 but\u00a0what you are doing\u00a0is\u00a0turning it into this specific plan for next week.<\/p>\n

The forecast-to-budget widget (as snappy as it sounds)<\/h3>\n

Just before you get swept away by the\u00a0handsomeness\u00a0of weekly resource planning, let me\u00a0tell you about another\u00a0cool feature\u00a0in the April release.\u00a0This one\u2019s\u00a0as good-looking\u00a0as\u00a0it\u00a0is clever.<\/p>\n

We’re adding this cunning little widget\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it’s a little dial.\u00a0As\u00a0you modify the plan\u00a0on the planning board, it recalculates\u00a0the ramifications of the new plan based on costs against your original budget.\u00a0I know, spiffy!<\/p>\n

While you’re under budget\u00a0the dial shows\u00a0a\u00a0green arrow that points downwards to\u00a0say,\u00a0\u2018You’re under\u2019!\u00a0Then as you get within 95 percent to 100 percent it turns into a green tick\u00a0saying,\u00a0\u2018You’re good. Don’t fiddle with it. You’re good!\u2019\u00a0Then when you get over 101 percent\u00a0(you have a little bit of wiggle room for rounding errors)\u00a0that arrow turns\u00a0red\u00a0to say,\u00a0\u2018No,\u00a0you’re\u00a0over budget\u2019.<\/p>\n

Every time you update anything in the plan\u00a0that arrow will\u00a0recalculate,\u00a0and it will give you a visual indicator in real time to say,\u00a0\u2018If you do that,\u00a0this is where you\u2019ll be in your budget\u2019.<\/p>\n

So, let\u2019s say in the original plan, my resources might have been six people for 40 hours a week.\u00a0That’s my plan. But then some people are away,\u00a0that person went\u00a0onto another job,\u00a0and I’ve got a junior person in their place\u00a0\u2014\u00a0things are changing as we go.\u00a0If I swap an expensive person for a cheap person then I’m going to be under budget. Yay!<\/p>\n

Then\u00a0maybe\u00a0we\u00a0approach\u00a0delivery date, and I’ve got to deliver this project in a short period of time and then I go,\u00a0\u2018Oh. Damn it,\u00a0I’m behind schedule. I’m not going to deliver this on time.\u00a0Boo!\u00a0I need some more people.\u2019\u00a0\u2026\u00a0Ah, well that’s okay because you’re under budget. So\u00a0now I want to start bringing in extra resources and adding in their hours, but really I’m only allowed to do that until I break my budget again\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s the forecast-to-budget widget to the rescue, because you can see what these adjustments are doing to your\u00a0budget\u00a0at\u00a0a glance.<\/p>\n

Keeping an eye on the road ahead<\/h3>\n

We\u2019re really pleased with this release and we know\u00a0they\u2019ll be popular features. On top of that, this represents one more step in the journey of resource planning\u00a0and we\u2019re\u00a0chomping at the bit to show you what\u2019s coming.
